A guide from the island
What to bring back from Zanzibar
You have a few days left, and there are people at home waiting for something from the trip. A spice is the answer most visitors land on. This guide covers what travels well, what to skip, and how to make it read as a gift.
Start with whole spices
Whole spices keep their scent for months. Cloves, cinnamon bark, cardamom pods, nutmeg and black pepper are all sold whole on the island. All of them survive a suitcase better than anything ground. Vanilla pods keep well too, wrapped in paper or wax.
Ground spices fade within weeks of leaving the farm. Ground turmeric also stains everything near it, so it needs its own sealed bag. If a jar of ground spice is your only option, keep it in its sealed bag inside a hard container.
What to skip
Thin plastic bags from the market split under the weight of other luggage, and the scent escapes into your clothes. Loose mixes of ground spices lose their character fast. Bottles of oil leak at cabin pressure. If the gift cannot survive the flight home, it was not worth carrying.
Check your own rules
Most countries allow small amounts of dried spices for personal use, but the rules differ by country and they change. Before you fly, check what your own customs service says about dried food in checked and hand luggage. Ten minutes of reading saves a gift at the border.
The gift question
A market bag says groceries. What makes spices read as a gift is the wrapping: a box, local cloth, something tied by hand. The island has the materials, and the person who sells you the spices often has the skill. Ask for it wrapped, or wrap it yourself the night before you fly.
A simpler way
Taamu does this for you. You choose three of eight island spices on your phone. We wrap them by hand in local cloth or palm. The box is $35, brought to your hotel anywhere on Zanzibar within two days. It is packed before you leave.
